Autumn Towels

I just finished weaving five autumn towels and a bread basket cloth. OK, so the bread basket cloth was supposed to be a sixth towel, but I ran out of warp yarn. Hey, bread basket cloths are good. They're all from the same warp. Changing weft yarns certainly makes a huge difference.

Tying on a Warp

In more than 25 years of weaving I have never tied on a warp. I always beam a new warp and then thread and sley it. Usually I weave a variety of items--towels, scarves, purses, etc.--which is a prime reason to not tie on.

However, this time I decided I would weave another set of towels following the same pattern as the last batch but change the weft color. I'm going to use the same warp yarn because it blends well with a variety of colors. I'm using unmercerized 8/2 cotton for both warp and weft.

"Linen Weave" Towels

Using a linen weave pattern, I wove four towels from unmercerized 8/2 cotton. They're approximately 18" x 27", hemmed. The warp is turtledove and the weft foliage green.

I like this weave structure. It gives a slightly raised effect to alternate rectangles.

Handwoven Cotton Towels

Below is a picture of one of four towels I wove for my aunt. I used 8/2 unmercerized cotton for both the warp and the weft. The pattern is Linen Weave.

More Holiday Towels Pictures

As a follow-up to my previous post, here are some more photos of the overshot red and green cotton towels that I finished. The pattern is called "Susan Ross."

Gallery

As of today, I'm officially displaying and selling my weaving at the Krieger-Marcusen Gallery in Prescott, AZ! I'm very excited. They offer amazing ceramics, paintings, woodwork, jewelry, and, now, handweaving.

Towels Again

I finished the towels I wrote about a couple weeks ago. I'm quite pleased with the result.

The weave structure is linen weave (from Marguerite Davison's book, A Handweaver's Pattern Book). I used a variegated cotton flake yarn for the weft which added a horizontal brushstroke effect to the vertical rectangles of the linen weave.

The fabric has a lovely hand. The towels are approximately 17 1/2" by 30".

Towels

Towels are on my loom at the moment. I'm using an 8/2 cotton warp in purple and a 3.5S variegated cotton flake weft. The weave structure is linen weave. The multi-colored cotton flake really transforms the pattern in interesting ways. I like it.

Handwoven Towels

I finally finished weaving these hand towels. The warp had been on the loom for longer than I care to say.

They came out quite nice. I used unmercerized 8/2 cotton for both the warp and the weft. The warp contains three colors -- sage, caramel, and blue indigo -- which I threaded randomly. I used the sage green for the weft. The pattern is a twill.

I like generously-sized towels. These measure 18" x 29" hemmed.
